Wednesday Word October 2026: Pettifogger

I cannot promise how, where or when these words were used, if ever. I simply find them delightful, and want to share.

PETTIFOGGER

Someone who quibbles over trivia and raises petty, annoying objections.

I game D&D with people like this.

What’s really irritating is that they have admitted that they are not familiar with the 5e system, but they will argue about points and hit points and how ballistas actually work, and “I’m the rogue so I’m ALWAYS checking for traps, I shouldn’t have to announce it above board for every situation!”

If I gamed with teenagers, I could understand this– your brain hasn’t finished cooking, you’ve got hormones, you’ve invested in this character with awesome stats, and got some good loot along the way. Of course you’re going to be pissy if that ballista you just let loose didn’t hit the demi-god lich and he eats your brains in retribution.

But the folks I’m gaming with are 40+. They are experienced gamers. Multiple systems. For Decades. And they haven’t actually even tried to read the rules for 5e, or any system you play with them, more than the minimum character development.

But they will ARGUE the game to a STANDSTILL.

I’ve actually left the table during some debates, unloaded the dishwasher, loaded the dishwasher, set it to wash, come back to the dining room table, AND THEY’RE STILL BITCHING ABOUT HOW IT WASN’T FAIR THEY DIED.

My dude, you are a grown-ass man. You have invested nothing except time into this campaign. You claim to be a veteran gamer– how have you survived gaming with this attitude?
