July was not a productive month. At all. It would be lovely to blame it on someone or something else, but no–it was all me. I can’t even say that I went on a vacation or a digital detox. Nope. Just…didn’t do any of the things.
So…writing. Specifically, is there something I regret as a writer for my process or overall or some such.
Lacking discipline is a big one. While writing can feel like a magical activity, and the results can certainly read like one, it most definitely is not a fiery burst of activity fueled by caffeine and thoughtless snacks. The initial idea might get birthed that way, but the rest of it is work.
Daily discipline to clock in and do at least one thing to forward the plot. Write 100 hundred words, spellcheck, research that sticky point for how a car engine works enough to get through that scene, edit one scene, re-edit that scene; balance your checkbook, document your sales, plan the next photo shoot for the raw cover art picture, look up youtube videos for how to use the formatting software or the image editing software.
Discipline is what gets you through the grind to produce the pretty bits that everyone “Oooos” and Aaaaaahhhhs” over.
Discipline is what my brain lacks. I’m told that no, it’s Dopamine your brain lacks, not discipline, but either way, The big regret is the seeming inability to sit the butt into my chair and work.
