September 7 question – What genre would be the worst one for you to tackle and why?

Ooooo…..There’s a list.

Hot and graphic romance. I know how sex works, I have experienced various positions and methods of foreplay, and I have an imagination enough to figure out the stuff I don’t know firsthand without reading an IKEA manual for how to do it. That, and I like plot more than I like an entire chapter on spanking.

Non-fiction History. When writing these things, you have to draw a line somewhere otherwise your reader will get lost and wonder what the hell you are talking about 3 chapters in. I tend to want ALL THE INFORMATION FROM ALL THE SOURCES and then I get excited and try disseminating all of it at somebody. Their eyes usually get gradually wider with a growing expression of panic as they try to slowly back out of the room to make their escape from me.

Mostly Accurate Historic Fiction. Because of the Non-fiction reasons above. And because a sudden left turn that involves aliens or magic or something-not-generally-possible-but-is-a-legit-part-of-that-storytelling-universe amuses me greatly. (C’mon. A Western Romance/Who-Dunnit with G’darg from Planet 9 as a major protagonist–you know you want to read it.)

Science Fiction. Too much thinky. I don’t care if my explanation for how my technology works defies the laws of physics – my tech moves at the speed of plot, and that’s that.

There are probably others that I haven’t thought of, but I’m tired and have to pretend like I’m an adult right now.

Check out the Insecure Writer’s Support Group to see more writers dish about their concerns, their solutions to various problems, or wonder why the hell they agreed to make a Gandalf the Grey costume for their son, complete with the fingerless gloves, to distract themselves from writing.

I can write romance in another genre, but I couldn’t write a standalone romance or a graphic one.

I don’t mind a pinch of romance, but not all the way. I second Natalie. I don’t mind reading historical fiction but would never write it.
