IWSG September 2019

If you could pick one place in the world to sit and write your next story, where would it be and why?

Somewhere remote. Somewhere that it takes a few hours to get to the nearest neighbor. Lots of trees, but maybe something with a tower above so I can stargaze without having my view blocked. Oooo… I would need an internet connection for on-the-fly research (that seems to help me get through tough spots in writing, and I’m not much for social media, so that time suck isn’t really an issue for me). A fireplace. A real one, although I could make do with a gas one if I had to. A creek or some other kind of water nearby.

In Iceland about 18 months ago, I saw a house on an islet well away from the nearest town on the “mainland.” Just that house. The islet might have been a mile or two in circumference, and we didn’t see a dock of any kind to get to to it, so I guess if you live there you’re kinda screwed if you want to go somewhere when it isn’t high tide. A place like that might work, but I’d still want some trees.

As for the why?

Peopling is difficult. And irritating. And extremely difficult. And I know that sounds whiny, like “well, if you publish books, you’ll have to people in some fashion, even if it’s just remotely over email or social media or something.” And while that is true,it doesn’t change the fact that I do not like peopling.

It looks like that house is prepared for Global Warming’s rising oceans!

Besides my recently renovated office, which I absolutely LOVE (because of the layout, the paint scheme, and “new energy”…), it would be in a house/camp on a wooded lake in the Adirondacks of upstate New York (much like my post, https://fpdorchak.wordpress.com/2016/08/29/the-lake-titus-camp-summer-2016/). It’s where I’m from and I love the “nature and solitude” of the woods and water. The terrain. I love the smell and feel and beat of the forest and dark waters there. The HEART of the Adirondacks, where I grew up. I’ve always loved being around water–specifically, lakes and ponds. Always loved being in the woods. I find these places magically and creatively energetic!

Very interesting post, KWB! I like it!
