Why Writing is Like a Relationship
Beauty.
It sounds shallow, but just stop and think about it for a moment.
Something attracted you to that person. Was it their hair? Their eyes? The smile? Their incredible ass? The swagger? Their nose? Their sense of humor? Something of that person who you chose to involve yourself with attracted you. It reached out, grabbed you and reeled you in.
Likewise, something about your story idea was attractive to you. Something made you sit up a little straighter and pay attention to that random thought floating through your head. Was it a zippy one-liner you could build a scene around? A character concept? A world you wanted to build? A philosophy you wanted to explore without all the exams inherent in a college level course? Something grabbed your face, locked lips with your brain and made you think:
“Damn, that’s hot.”
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We look at a couple in a coffee shop and shallowly think “uh… no,” much the same way we do with books. What you think is gorgeous another person thinks is trash. What you think is brilliant another believes is puerile garbage.
We each think that our work is pretty.
Even if we don’t write pretty things.
