IWSG May 2025

May 7 question – Some common fears writers share are rejection, failure, success, and lack of talent or ability. What are your greatest fears as a writer? How do you manage them?

Ahhhh….imposter syndrome. A favorite subject of mine, if you haven’t been able to tell from past entries.

I think the big fear is a big scoop of rejection, topped with failure sprinkles. Or failure sauce, if that’s your preference.

I think the greatest fear is putting stuff out there and losing lots of money on it.

The way I deal with other fears in my life is …

Not consistent.

Sometimes there’s a huge freeze response. Other times I just rip the bandage off, do the thing, do some deep breathing, maybe some emotional eating, deal with insomnia for an evening or 2.

Sometimes I have to work up to the BBF. Sometimes I must think, and consider and plan and overthink, then try to do it the hard way, then just rip the bandage off in raw frustration. Then we do the breathing and the eating and the not-so-sleepy jitters, anyway.

I am not a completely rational person. I save that mask for my day job.

No insomnia for me. I’m a sleepy gnome. Maybe some emotional drinking and snacking.

Today WordPress is up to one of its tricks again,. keeps telling me I don’t exist

Used to freak me out, until I realised this was about them, not me,

Now I just wait till it works again. .

Biggest fear ? Chased away, every time I switch on the news,

None of my own little fears compare anymore

“Losing lots of money” is something to be concerned about. I definitely think you’re onto something there. The investment factor is definitely something that holds me back.

“losing money’ yes. I stopped doing online ads because they just vanished money into the ether. Now I lose money doing craft fairs. I usually sell something, but not enough to cover the cost of the stand and travel… then I realised how much I liked getting out and talking to people about books (any books, not just mine) and other regular stall holders, and I thought, if I was buying a ticket for this day out it would cost me a lot more.

So my answer is, unless you want to be a best-seller, and have books that would make you a best seller, don’t spend much money on promoting them. Find the style you enjoy and count the enjoyment into the value you’re getting. 🙂

There are ways to lose money on a book but plenty on how not to lose money. With a traditional publisher, even a small one, you won’t lose money. Just the time spent writing the book.
