A Boot to the Head

It’s interesting when you want to do something, but the learning curve is not an easy climb, for whatever reason, you will find all manner of ways to work on stuff tangentially related, but not really THE THING.

Then something comes out of left field, and nails you in the head. Like a game of dodgeball, and you lost concentration for a moment.

Wham! To the side of the head.

Or if you were really unfortunate, a WHAM! to the side of the head, with a flinch that SLAM!s the other side of your head into the brick wall behind you. Of course, the ball bounces against your head one more time to mock you before falling innocently to the ground after that.

If you’re a post Gen-Xer, you may not have had that particular brutal life lesson from gym class, but adulting can feel like that, sometimes.

Sometimes, that headshot is necessary–a wake up call, if you will. “You snooze, you lose.”

Sometimes, it feels like it’s entirely gratuitous and even unfair; you’re not the athlete of the class, everyone knows it, so the best jock deciding to cannonball a headshot at you is cruelly unnecessary.

In the first case, you panic a bit, pull yourself together, and get your head back on the game for round 2.

In the second, tears may be involved; you may even have to cycle through the 5 flavors of whatever in order to get back to a functional state.
