Under Construction

As you may have noticed, I’m goofing around with the WordPress editor for my page.

I emphasize “goofing around”, because a lot of it is actually me randomly stumbling over things after clicking through the same menu 47 times, and trying to make things consistent, one little widget at a time.

I suppose I could make it easier by watching videos, either official WordPress Editor videos or whatever random video I can find on YouTube, that may or may not supply the right answer for what I want to do, and still be a cheapskate about it.

A lot of my website work, or GIMP work, or what-not is a process that looks a lot like this:

  1. Think “It can’t be that hard. Millions of people do it everyday.”
  2. Discover I have no idea what I’m doing.
  3. Scream in rage; resist the urge to throw the laptop across the room.
  4. Take a deep breath through the nose; walk away.
  5. Stay away for weeks, stewing in frustration, while my brain mulls over what I did, why it was wrong, and what are other methods of approach.
  6. Take another deep breath, remind myself that computers are, in fact, dumber than boxes of hair, and only do what you tell them to do, so you have to figure out how to tell them to do it in a language they understand. Much like breaking down why we need to clean up after ourselves to a 2 year old.
  7. Step through the process one piece at a time, possibly taking notes, possibly watching videos
  8. Achieve some modicum of success. Not ALL the success, just a modicum of it.
  9. Take another deep breath, and walk away again, to return and play with things again at a later date.
  10. Look up “modicum” to make certain I’m using the word correctly.
  11. Accidentally catch a news article on how the entire world is going to hell and everything we know and are familiar with is doomed. Making me question my life choices. Again.
  12. Wonder why I always make myself go through all these steps when the relevant ones are only 1, and 7; possibly 8, and 9.

As we know, the above list is not exactly the most efficient use of my time and resources, but it seems to be how my brain wants to do the work thing.

I suppose any forward progress is a good thing, though, so I’ll take it.
