IWSG April 2023

Yes, I’ve dropped the ball on posting these a couple three times.

There’s been a lot going on that I’m still trying to get through.

Oh, will the mucky-yuckiness of inconvenient adulting every stop? Or at least ease up a bit? Like, what the hell?

And I keep getting squirreled.

Onward! To the Question at hand!

Do you remember writing your first book? What were your thoughts about a career path on writing? Where are you now and how is it working out for you? If you’re at the start of the journey, what are your goals?

It took me 10 years to write my first trilogy. In my defense, I was 14 when I started that little piece of fantasy fiction, so there was a lot going on then as well that interfered with nose-to-the-grindstone writing. Though that trend doesn’t seem to be changing any.

At the time, I thought being an author would be a fun career. At the time, I didn’t realize there was so much ADDITIONAL work that an author has to do, besides writing, and trying to forcibly wrap my head around that the last few years has been challenging.

Harder than potty training 2 toddlers at the same time, I would say.

I’m starting to get my hands dirty about setting up a small business, since that’s what self-published authors are. I want to be able to do it correctly from the beginning so I don’t have to go back and re-tool whole sections that I’d hopelessly fouled-up because I didn’t know what I was doing and only later discovered, resulting in: “Aw, shit. How do I recover from this grand-daddy of a mistake?”

Because, you know, the legal establishment can be really pissy about things if you don’t do things JUST SO.

Kicking around new names to look into to see if they’re taken. Looking at the legal ins and outs of XYZ. Considering different production and marketing angles. Consulting the stars. Acquiring a couple three books.

Figuring out the best way to defy The Man. Might sacrifice a gnu or something as I eat crystals to align my chakras and goals with the Universal Ohm or something.

Actually signing up for a 6-hour Start-up Boot Camp through the looking Small Business Development center (this coming Monday).

You know. Doing EVERYTHING that I need to do to potentially successfully self-publish WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING ANY OF THE DAMNED WRITING!

Stupid Squirrels.

The damned writing ? The easy bit ?
    Toddlers ?
Must share a family legend –
Two and a half, to another, same age. ‘I don’t play with babies who wear nappies.’
    Apparently this works.
