What personal traits have you written into your character(s)?

Umm… I think the list would be shorter if we asked what personal traits I didn’t write into my characters.

I’ve used so many things – my personal faith, my outlooks on what a relationship should and shouldn’t be, my mule-headed tendency to try and do everything myself.  My experience with depression and anxiety attacks. Insecurities, fears, physical capabilities, hobbies, hair, eyes, stature, precious work experiences. Dumbass mistakes. High hopes. Thrashed dreams. Nightmares. Grief. Regrets. Rage. Pain. Spite. Odd habits. Memories, good and bad. First-hand knowledge of how and why something works.

Each character I’ve created is usually some facet of me I’m interested in exploring, good and bad. Maybes. What-ifs. Shoulda-coulda-wouldas. If it was possible, if it was real, if I wasn’t afraid or even just a bit braver than I am now, I’d do X.

Writing is a great way to explore facets of ourselves. I know I do that in my own books – sometimes they’re traits I don’t really like about myself that I end up poking fun at.

Pretty much everything…including some traits I test-drove in stories prior to adopting! But, heck, been writing since the Stone Age, so don’t ask me to elaborate…. ;-]
