POV’s I Don’t Agree With

Romance 2 is progressing, and once again I’m finding it difficult to write a particular character’s POV.

Not a villain, not even a slightly bad guy. He’s a pretty decent dude, just trying to be a normal, nice guy. He’s my hero in this particular book.

The problem for me is, his views on certain subjects and the views of some of the people he talks to, are different from my own.  They’re not bad people, and they all mean well, they’re just definitely not my people.

But I’ve got to write dialogue for these people that works for their views, for the conflict their discussing and the possible solutions one could explore. I have to make their arguments somewhat accurate to be fair to the folks who do actually see things that way, without making them look stupid, because their way of thinking clashes with that of my heroine’s and myself.

It’s hard to take the opposite position of an opinion you hold and DEFEND it with at least some attempt at accuracy, clarity and grace. It’s difficult to look at someone’s views you believe to be particularly shallow and stupid and give it the depth and solemnity it deserves, because while it may not seems like much to you, this might be a BIG THING for the other person.

Writing the heroine’s POV in this particular story is easy. Writing the hero’s is substantially less so.
