Why Writing is Like a Relationship
After you’ve parted ways with your story, you wander aimlessly for a little bit. Sometimes you take a goodly time to come around. You do your research before jumping into another big project.
Other times a gorgeous idea grabs your face, sticks her tongue down your throat and says “Take me now, you stud,” while you’re minding your own business in the grocery store.
It’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re cheap or easy.Nor does it mean that the idea is doomed to failure just because it hit you unexpectedly from out of the blue.
My marriage started off as a rebound relationship. I’m pretty sure my parents did as well, since they met and got married within 6 weeks. (my own courtship was 2 years, but my husband tells me it would’ve been 6 weeks if I hadn’t been such a chicken).
I’ve spent years working on a world, hammering down the rules and making everything just so. When I decided I was done, I backed off and when I wasn’t looking, another story broadsided me.
The only story I really feel guilty about this is Hatpins. I was kinda working on a different one when that came along and well…
Things just happened. But everyone is cool with it. It took a little while to smooth over the ruffled feathers and all that, but we’re all friends now.
