Why Writing is Like a Relationship
So you and your writing have settled down and it’s a Happily Ever After moment.
Then your writing spawns offspring. What you thought was a one-off turned into an entire litter. “Where did this series come from?” you ask your writing. “And all these other stories? I don’t remember having this many ideas.”
Well, when a writer loves his craft very much…
Now you have a whole mess of other responsibilities to take care of: consistently applying the rules of your world to each story. Giving each story its own space to grow and be a unique individual instead of a carbon-copy of your first born. Maybe even a little planned parenting should come into play: Let’s plan when we’re pushing them out instead of just creating stories willy-nilly with no thought of nurturing and formation.
We want our babies to grow up and be able to stand on their own without us having to take them back into the nest every year for a new cover or a re-edit.
